Camping with the Brookharts

May 28, 2009

Memorial Day weekend we went camping with Jamie’s family.  The lodge we went to was so nice…a big family room, galley kitchen and two rooms each with 8 bunkbeds for a total for 32 beds.  Boys on one side, girls on the other.  I found it hard to sleep though because it was a cabin and I have a huge fear of spiders.

Saturday we took the kids to the West Burlington pool.  As soon as we got dressed we ran to the pool and the whistle blew alerting people that there will be a 15 minute break.  Finally we were allowed to get in and clouds started rolling in.  Within an hour, the whistle blew again and an announcement was made that everyone had to go into the bath house for a half hour.  So we left.  It was long enough for the kids though…so it was a nice break.

Sunday we took the kids to Geode beach.  All I can say is nasty.  Gavin sat down to take off his sandals and sat right in goose poo.  We allowed the kids to get their feet wet in the water – but it was so gross that we didn’t want them going any farther.  Although by the time we left they were wet about up to their chests.  I completely stressed watching them in that water.  And I finally SNAPPED when I saw Gavin and Lincoln put a handful of sand in their mouths.  I can’t believe they didn’t get sick.

The adults played games at night while the kids went to bed or watched movies.  SkipBo…my new favorite game!  And an old time favorite – Whoonu.

Jamie’s folks made great meals like lasagna, taco salad, biscuits and gravy and new potatoes with bacon and green beans.  Yum!

And of course what is camping without a little rain.  Monday it poured.  Nothing like packing up the van in torrential rain.

The kids were able to run freely inside and out.  They loved it.  A great weekend.

I love how Vaughn calls McDonalds “Apple Dippers”.

Gracie called Grandma today.  After she was done talking, and I was talking to mom, Gracie needed the phone back to say:

“Grandma, guess what’s at McDonald’s.  It’s brown and yummy.  (pause) BROWNIES!”

Yes, McDonald’s now sells Brownie Melts for $1.69.

Anniversary Dinner

May 27, 2009

Tonight we went out with the Garwoods for our anniversaries.  Ours was Monday…theirs is Friday.  Donna found us a babysitter 🙂  Brody’s girlfriend Erin.  The whole clan came…Matt (Erin’s dad, our friend) showed up with one of his boys.  When we got back, Erin and her two brothers and cousin were all here.  It was great fun for the kids – all these people in our home.

We decided to try a new place we’d heard about…The Blueport Bar and Grill. When we got there…Beth Davis from Dwyer and Michaels show was there.  I guess it was Biker Night!  Hilarious.  I got to learn all about Beer Pong.  We got to hang out and chat all night without kids.  It’s been a while.  A much needed break.  And Steve and Donna are so much fun to be with.    Now 10pm and definitely past my bedtime.

Potty Training – FINALLY!!!!

May 25, 2009

So we’ve been trying to potty train the boys on and off for the last year.  Friday night we went camping with Jamie’s folks – in a cabin.  We took their potty chairs, underwear, pull-ups and diapers.  All three decided that night they were ready to go in the potty chair.  We didn’t even really do anything except set their chairs out and tell them to let us know if they have to go.  And of course make a huge deal about it when they do go…pee pee candy and the pee pee song.  We’ve definitely had accidents since Friday night.  But I’m not exaggerating when I say that each boy has gone in the potty chair about 15 or more times each day (well, in the potty chair or on the tree).  Now – imagine 15 x 3 and you can imagine how exhausted we are with it.  We keep wondering how they can keep squeezing that much more pee out.  We’ve only had two poopy underwear in three days, and 2 poopy diapers.  We put them in diapers at night and naps still.  But it is absolutely crazy how it was all three and all at once.  Gavin has done the best and I thought it would be Vaughn because he’s been using the potty chair when he feels like it for months.  Lincoln has never even gone in the potty chair for me until last week after he spent a couple nights at Grandma’s and she got him to go a couple of times.  And Gavin had only  used it 2 or 3 times in the past couple of months until Grandma worked on it with him too.  I can’t think of one accident that Gavin has had and he has kept his diaper dry at night and naps.  I’ve been so stressed about getting them trained by fall for preschool.  I was planning on spending an entire week really focused on it when Nana takes Lucy and Grace for a week in June while Jamie is on his fishing trip.  I’m so excited that the hardest part is done!!!  Good Job little boys 🙂

Our tent was plenty big for all of us.  The kids kept warm in their sleeping bags.  I FROZE until Andy C. loaned me his extra sleeping bag.

On Monday, May 18 we replaced old flags in Greenwood Cemetary.  I knew the kids would really enjoy it.  This is Lincoln putting a flag in the holder.DSC03521

Lucy at the 500 club banquet for selling 500 boxes of girl scout cookies.  Aunt Jenny and I took her while Nana watched the other 4 kids.  Lucy LOVED the wrist corsage that Aunt Jenny bought her – it had a carnation and a rose.  Her favorite flower is a rose.  She also got a little trophy for selling 500 boxes.  The dinner was at the Comfort Suites in Burlington and they had a chicken strips and potato bar.  Perfect food for little girls.0430091800

While I was at a girl scout meeting in Burlington, Jenny watched the boys.  Little did I know that she had called her friend Brandi for a photo shoot.  The rain ruined their plans for pictures in the park…but I think these turned out even better!  They rolled up their jeans, gave the boys an umbrella and ended up with GREAT pictures.  You can see more pictures of the boys on Brandi’s website:  She takes really amazing pictures.

Gracie doing her thing at her last preschool performance ever at Discovery Days. Next year she’ll go to a new Preschool where she will go all day 4 days a week.  I’m sad to leave DD even though I’ve heard great things about her new school.  I love her teachers at DD and will miss them.

Daddy and Gavin roastin marshmellows on our camping trip on May 16th.

Lucy loves her smores.

The boys loved the hand dryer in the bathroom at the campground.  They were cold and wanted to warm up.

Cooking supper together Saturday night.  Shish ka bobs and fruit salad.

Donna borrowed my camera to take some pics of Brody and Erin on homecoming.  She left her pics on my camera so of course I’m posting a couple.  What a cute couple and cute mama!DSC03388

Obviously having a lot of fun.
